The month of February is Black History Month and honors the accomplishments of Black Americans throughout history.
AHS has been including educational video lessons on the origins and history behind why we celebrate Black History Month during W4 lessons. These lessons are made by students who take African American History.
According to the Annandale Community Insider, “guided by resources curated by the FCPS Social Studies Office”, students in US/VA History classes have been working on a month-long summative about the African American experience during Reconstruction
Although there is no longer the much-loved school-wide Black History Bowl, clubs and organizations have also taken part in celebrating African American history.
On Friday, Feb. 16th, in donation to Black Lives Matter organizations, Key Club held their annual valentines bake sale in the Jock Lobby and within ten minutes sold over $170 of a range of Valentines themed baked goods.
The Social Studies Honor Society made a display case in the history hallways that spotlights various Black trailblazers.
“As the secretary of the BSU, I celebrate black history month individually but also with the positive community built around African Americans at Annandale. For example, as a community we celebrate Black History Month by having a cultural potluck hosted between the different black clubs at Annandale, including BSU, AA, EAS, and SSA,” senior Erica Lewis said
