On Friday, September 15th 2023, singer / songwriter “Mitski” released her newest album “The Land Is Inhospitable And So Are We.” Produced by her longtime-collaborator, Patrick Hyland, Mitski’s 7th album features 11 tracks: Bug Like an Angel, Buffalo Replaced, Heaven, I Don’t Like My Mind, The Deal, When Memories Snow, My Love Mine All Mine, The Frost, Star, I’m Your Man, and I Love Me After You, totaling to 32 minutes and 22 seconds long. In Bug Like An Angel, she states “As I got older, I learned I’m a drinker / Sometimes, a drink feels like family,” which sophomore Nathaniel Dosen thinks “The song is about how someone doesn’t get alone with their family and tries to replace the emptiness left behind because of that through the use of alcohol.” And, in her song The Frost, she sings “it’s just witness-less me,” realizing that she’s alone in her grief. The album is heart-wrenching, the songs speaking of the feelings of being a grown-up, the loves and the losses that feel so minuscule yet so enormous. From the bottom of a glass, to a memory of slushy snow, to being in heaven, this album draws everyone and everything in with the feeling of love and compromise. With all Mitski albums and songs, with love comes heartbreak.
