Ms. Marvel trailer explained
A pleasant surprise for Marvel fans as Marvel dropped the official trailer for Ms. Marvel! Ms. Marvel is a highly anticipated show coming to Disney+ and it looks great. Ms. Marvel was one of many new Marvel shows shown off at D23 back in 2019 and since then, we’ve been anticipating trailers and news. The show will star rising actress Iman Vellani as Ms. Marvel aka Kamala Khan and officially premieres on June 8th, 2022. Kevin Fiege confirmed that we’ll be getting Ms. Marvel before She-Hulk, but don’t worry because a trailer for She-Hulk could drop soon. Marvel fans know who Ms. Marvel is, but many casual MCU fans may not; so who is Ms. Marvel?
Ms. Marvel, though her debut was eight years ago, is still a new character within Marvel, but I’m happy Kevin Fiege is giving her a chance to shine on the small screen. Ms. Marvel broke barriers in her debut comic Ms. Marvel written by G. Willow Wilson because Ms. Marvel is Marvel’s first mainstream Muslim superhero. Kamala Khan is your average teenage girl who loves superheroes and comic books, until one day she decides to defy her parents and leave late at night where she’s exposed to the Terrigan Mist and gains elastic abilities to grow her limbs and size at will. And because she was exposed to the Terrigan Mist, she’s also an Inhuman which is an alien race that reside on the moon ruled by Black Bolt; however, because Kamala is human her DNA has some alien genes. She’s been a member of the Avengers and more recently is a member of the Champions with Amadeus Cho Hulk, Miles Morales Spider-Man, Cyclops, Vivian, and Nova Sam Alexander. Her MCU origin will look completely different to her comic book origin and for the right reasons. Marvel probably has no plans to rectify the Inhumans in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after the Inhumans show on ABC flopped with fans and critics. Kamala’s powers have also changed as well, instead of elastic abilities she’ll be wearing a cosmic bracelet that allows her to make her like constructs. Marvel fans have been split on Kamala’s power change with many saying her MCU powers resemble Green Lantern from DC Comics a little too much. Her power change was due to the fact that her powers are identical to Mister Fantastic of the Fantastic Four and it’s the right call to make as we’ll be getting him in the future, so Marvel doesn’t want to confuse anyone.
The villain in this series is a group known as ClanDestine who are an obscure group in Marvel. ClanDestine was first introduced in Marvel Comics Presents issue #158 written by Alan Davis, though they were expanded on in ClanDestine issue #1 also written by Alan Davis. ClanDestine is a superpowered group run by Adam Destine and Elalyth with their children: Flo, Garth, Lance, Maurice Fortuit, Sherlock, Thaddeus, Vincent, Roy, and Pandora. Adam has been alive since 1168 A.D. and ClanDestine over the years have become reluctant superheroes working alongside Daredevil, Doctor Strange, and the X-Men. It’s very interesting to see Marvel use this obscure group of characters considering they haven’t been in a Marvel comic since 1994, however be prepared to see them weaved back into comics with potentially a new origin to match their MCU origins. They will also be accompanied by the organization NICE where they’ll be recruiting young superheroes to their organization.
One of the great things about the trailer, and what looks to be the entire series, is that Ms. Marvel was heavily inspired by G. Willow Wilson’s Ms. Marvel run. Much like the Hawkeye and its shot-for-shot adaptation of Matt Fraction’s Hawkeye: My Life as A Weapon, Ms. Marvel will do the same for G. Willow Wilson’s Ms. Marvel. Ms. Marvel’s poster is directly inspired by Ms. Marvel issue #5 cover art by artist Adrian Alphona and Marvel fans spotted the convenient store Circle Q which is frequently shown in G. Willow Wilson’s Ms. Marvel.
Ms. Marvel looks great and will have a lot of heart with this young hero. It looks really cute and sweet for a coming of age show and I’m hopeful Ms. Marvel will introduce many people to this character, especially those who are Muslim and can relate to this character in anyway, and will get them to go read some of her comics because she’s an awesome and fun character to read. Ms. Marvel premieres on June 8th, 2022, exclusively on Disney+.
