Q&A with Laura Wells on AVID for newcomers

Q: Is AVID a class worth taking?

A: I think AVID is a class worth taking if you need help with managing your classwork and applying to college. It is a good class to take if you would like to be part of a community supporting you and your journey.

Q: What are some benefits that AVID can give?

A: AVID has paid college students that come to each class and help AVID students with whatever they are struggling with – math, writing, science, social studies, anything. AVID also helps you learn to set goals, manage your time, and keep track of your assignments. Finally, AVID helps students research their interests, learn how to turn their interests into careers, and find the colleges that will help them achieve their goals.

Q: Is AVID a fulfilling course?

A: Yes! I think especially when students get to be seniors they realize that all of the work they did was worth it because they are amazed at how far they have come over their years in high school. They graduate with their college plan ready to go, with the financial aid they need and their college courses picked out. AVID will be there for you even when you go to college. I talk to AVID alumni all the time about their majors, financial aid, and course planning to help them get through college.

Q: Does AVID help with other classes?

A: Yes, the tutors help students with their other classes and also the organizing work we do helps students figure out what they need to focus on and how to talk to their teachers to get the help they need.

Q: What can future students expect from AVID?

A: Future students can expect to spend time learning about colleges and careers, researching what paths are right for them, and learning how to take notes and study from those notes to do well on summative assessments. Hopefully we will begin going on field trips to visit colleges soon as well.
