Olivia Rodrigo shows her skills on Sour
After the release of her chart-topping debut single “drivers license,” Olivia Rodrigo released her freshman album “Sour” on May 21, 2021.
Before the release of the album, Rodrigo released two songs that quickly became popularized on TikTok. The singles, “deja vu” and “Good 4 U” dominated the charts and excited fans for Rodrigo’s new album. “drivers license” and “deja vu” both became number one singles, and all three songs made it onto the Billboard Hot 100. The album itself is also dominating on top of the Billboard Global 200.
Rodrigo has now become a sensational pop star with two number one singles and a number one album as well. The album made it at the top of Billboard’s chart and has had over 301 millions streams, and reached over 295,000 sales in the United States. The song broke streaming records on Spotify and has impressed millions of people. Her album was so successful that she now sells merchandise like bucket hats, cassettes and CD’s.
The album features 11 songs ranging from energetic pop-punk songs to bedroom pop ballads. The opening song is “brutal”, a 90s alt-rock song that discusses generational trauma.
“It was really good. I loved that some songs were more rock while others were slower ballads,” Freshmen Nisha Vasudevan said. Rodrigo entertains listeners as she details her life as a 17 year old going through the perils of young failed romances and heartache.
The album was written with her producer Dan Nigro, and they showcase beautiful melodies with honest lyrics on what a failed romance feels like. Rodrigo’s emotions were felt through her lyrics, and her heartfelt music resonated with many teenagers. Sour entailed a rollercoaster of emotions including jealousy, anger, sadness and doubt. All of which are emotions young people today feel on a regular basis especially after a heart break. “My favorite songs were “’brutal” and “happier”. I really liked her album because it portrayed lots of emotions,” Freshman Eliza Naranja said.
