Gotham Review
Gotham premiered Monday, Sept, 22 on the FOX Network. Gotham serves as a prequel to the story of Bruce Wayne, also known as Batman. The story of the show follows newly promoted Detective James Gordon(Ben McKenzie) following the high-profile murder case the parents of Bruce Wayne(David Mazouz), who later will become the Batman.
While working this case, Gordon, and his new partner Harvey Bullock(Donal Logue), must face crime lords Fish Mooney(Jada Pinkett Smith) and Carmine Falcone(John Doman), as well as a somewhat corrupt police department, while encountering many of Gotham’s future villains such as Ivy Pepper(Clare Foley), who becomes Poison Ivy, Edward Nygma(Cory Michael Smith), who becomes The Riddler, Oswald Cobblepot(Robin Lord Taylor), who becomes The Penguin, and Selina Kyle(Camren Bicondova), who becomes Catwoman.
During this entire process, Gordon forms a friendship with young Bruce Wayne, which will later help the boy evolve into the bat-fearing superhero we all know and love. The first episode covers Gordon’s introduction to Gotham and his immediate assignment to the very high-profile case of the murders of Bruce Wayne’s parents and how he vows to Bruce that he will find the killer no matter what. Personally, I loved the first episode. I think this is the beginning to a great series.
I really enjoyed how they teased all the future villains, especially how Oswald has to literally start from the bottom to become the crime lord Penguin. The writers did a great job on making well-planned origin stories for many characters in the story. I think this will be a great series and I can only wonder where the series can take the viewers as they follow Gordon in his journey to find Bruce’s killer. Lastly, the only negative thing I found in the entire episode was a very corny line.
This took place when Gordon first met Bruce and while comforting him, told him, “There will be light.” I just felt like that wouldn’t be something a normal person would say when trying to comfort a kid whose parents just died. Overall, it was a great episode and I’m dying to watch the next episode on Monday.
