Students react to the Grammys
The 56th Annual Grammy’s took place Sunday night at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The three and a half hour long event was full of memorable moments. 17 year old singer/songwriter Lorde and music duo Daft Punk were two of the night’s big winners, with Lorde taking home Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance for her song “Royals,” and Daft Punk winning Grammys for Record of the Year and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for their song “Get Lucky.” They also won Best Dance/Electronica Album and Album of the Year for “Random Access Memories.” Rap duo Macklemore and Ryan Lewis took home four awards and were joined by Madonna and Queen Latifah as they performed their song about marriage equality, “Same Love.” 33 couples, gay and straight, were married during the performance.
The night began with Beyoncé and Jay-Z performing their hit song “Drunk in Love.”
“I liked Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s performance the most,” sophomore Mahlate Bereket said, “Because I found it cool that they’re married and performed a song together.”
Other performances that had people talking included Imagine Dragons with Kendrick Lamar. Imagine Dragons and Kendrick Lamar performed Kendrick Lamar’s “m.A.A.d city” and a remix of Imagine Dragons’ “Radioactive”
“The collaboration between Imagine Dragons and Kendrick Lamar was great,” junior Danny Gutierrez said. “Kendrick always kills it and to see him perform with an awesome band like Imagine Dragons was just phenomenal, I liked the way their music combined.”
“My favorite performance was John Legend’s,” sophomore Raphael Yu said. “His songs are inspirational, and not every artist can sound good live. He truly has a good voice.”
Daft Punk performed “Get Lucky” with Pharrell and music legend Stevie Wonder.
“Daft Punk with Stevie Wonder and Pharrell was my favorite,” senior Muda Omer said. “Stevie Wonder is a musical legend, [and] when you put legendary status with talent it’s gonna be good.”
Some viewers did not like Lorde’s performance, which many called “awkward” and “weird.” Others liked it and thought it was different and unique.
“I thought she was weird,” sophomore Shaheer Akhtar said. “From my personal opinion I just don’t like her. I disliked the performance.”
“Lorde’s performance was tight because she was feelin’ it,” Omer said. “She was doing little dance movements, she’s different and music needs a change.”
This year at the Grammys there were many performance by older bands and artists, such as Metallica and Paul McCartney. Though some would rather see the newer artists, many people also appreciated the older acts
“I thought they were nice,” Bereket said. “It was good to bring some old artists back to the stage.”
“Metallica is just the greatest,” Gutierrez said. “The appearances by music legends was awesome and it was cool to see how they fit in with musicians today.”
