The FCPS School Board is considering ending the 2011-2012 school year on June 15 instead of June 19. This is due to the fact that only one of the three allotted snow days has been used this year.
The board will discuss the issue on March 29 and a final vote will be made on April 12. Students would only lose two additional days of school, which would be made into the final teacher workdays of the year. Many students are hoping the School Board will vote affirmatively to shorten the schedule.
“The [two] extra days will be useless since most teachers normally create their teaching calendars to accommodate those snow days,” junior Elizabeth Waugh said. “The teachers won’t have anything to give the students to do and money will be wasted keeping the school open.”
Students are not the only community within AHS who support the measure. Many teachers have also expressed their approval.
“It’s perfect. I’m really tired from this school year,” math teacher Roberto Obando said. “That would be great if we could close early.”
Although there have been calls from some seniors to move graduation back if the adjusted schedule is approved, this will not happen because Constitution Hall is reserved for June 14.
If the measure passes and any additional emergency closing occur, the School Board could still order make-up days. Check back on The A-Blast as the story develops.
