October 7, was the first spirit day in a week of spirit-filled activities leading up to AHS’s Homecoming football game. Students flaunted their knowledge of different fashions throughout the years on Decade Day. All types of fashions, from nineteenth century dress to 1980s gear was seen. Many students opted for easily recognizable fashions, including “hippie” outfits from the 1960s and 1980s workout clothes.
“Eighties are the most popular,” sophomore Amanda Villafana said. She herself was dressed in 1980s workout gear, and was sitting next to several other sophomores in costumes from the ‘80s.
There seemed to be a mixture of reactions to the spirit day. Although many students dressed up, the majority of the student body did not, and some students did not seem very interested in the rest of the spirit days.
“Spirit week is a good idea, but more people need to do it,” Villafana said. “I’m gonna dress up for everything.”
“I might dress up if I’m in the mood for it,” sophomore Tahani Yosuf said. She was not dressed up for Decade Day. However, she supported the idea of spirit week. “Yeah, I think its fun.”
The rest of the spirit days include Wacky Tacky Day on October 11, Favorite Sports Team Day the following day, and Atomic Day on October 14. Celebrity Day, which was originally planned for October 13, has been canceled due to First Lady Michelle Obama’s visit and could be rescheduled for the following week.
