On May 25, history teacher and Model U.N. advisor Jonathan York was named National Honor Society’s (NHS) Teacher of the Year. The senior members of NHS nominated their favorite teachers and then a list of 5 teachers were selected. In the final vote, York won the award and received a NHS bell at their final meeting of the year.
How many times have you won now?
This is the second time for NHS, it’s very embarrassing.
What does it feel like to win?
It’s humbling and embarrassing because there are so many other hardworking teachers in the school and in our department.
Since the senior class voted for you, what do you have to say to them?
This year has been a special senior class. I’ve been with these kids for three years with Model U.N. They’ve been one of the best Model U.N. groups. Academically and with extra-curriculars, they’ve done so much for this school. In 15 years, there are only been two or three classes like this.
What words of advice do you have for the class of 2011?
Life is long, don’t worry about making mistakes and do random acts of kindness. The more good deeds you do, the more good things will happen to you.
Why do you think they voted for you?
I have no idea. Trust me, it’s not something I aspire to [win]. I wish I could share it with all the teachers. It’s for all of the teachers.
What are your plans for next school year?
We’re expanding HOA, Ms. Berry and I will be helping Mr. Jepson. I’ll be working with Model U.N. [I’ll be] trying to improve. In all. honestly I never feel that I’m as prepared for class as I should be. I guess that is a good thing.
Has this school year been a successful year?
Yes, it has. It’s been a great year and it’s been great working with John Ponton.
