Last Thursday, April 22, seniors attended their last and most important class meeting during R1/R5 flex while underclassmen held class elections.
The meeting discussed much anticipated events such as prom and graduation but also covered the all night grad party and included a speech by Officer Ferraris about staying safe and making good choices. The meeting is considered as a wrap-up of the school year with much needed information for seniors.
The meeting began with distribution of ordered items from Balfour, a supplier of graduation caps, gowns and notification letters. Afterwards, there were discussions with important information about prom and graduation.
Senior Badou Hadidane said the most important highlights of the meeting were “the dates about prom and grad and all night grad.”
“We were able to cover a lot of subjects including graduation, prom, all night grad party and encouraging students to do everything they can to make it safely to the end of the year,” said English teacher and Graduation Co-coordinator Bonnie Vining.
The meeting wrapped up with a speech from Officer Ferraris about making good choices and staying safe on prom night. He shared stories of young teens and drinking and driving.
“When Officer Ferraris talked about making smart choices about not drinking and driving, what captivated students was the stories of people who didn’t make wise personal choicesand ended up paying with their lives,” said Vining.
Some students thought the speech was good, but there also could have additional ways to really get through to students rather than words alone.
“All that [Officer Ferraris] said was true and it opened my eyes. They need to make the whole drinking and driving thing more important, like maybe show pictures or displays to have more of an effect,” said senior Barbara Lopez.
The meeting was a sum up of the students’ final year at AHS and discussed many key events and important information that all seniors needed to know before graduation.
