It is mid-April now and before we know it, Standards Of Learning testing will be here again.
The first SOLs take place in late May and continue throughout June. To help students prepare for SOLs, some teachers are giving students a chance to come after school and have some SOL review time with them.
One teacher having SOL remediation with their students is Algebra teacher Teresa Lusby. “SOL remediation is definitely good, because it makes the material clearer for those who didn’t fully understand it and forces those who didn’t do homework to practice and actually do work,” Lusby said. Lusby’s job in the process of the SOL remediation is to touch on all the basic material that she and her students have covered throughout the school year, and review that material with those in remediation.
SOL remediation takes place every Wednesday after school until the actual SOLs take place. To be in remediation, one either has to sign up for it, or be recommended for it by their teachers.
Sophomore Amina Ahmed, who chose to be a part of SOL remediation said, “I’m doing SOL remediation because I want to make my math skills stronger and because I want to be ready for the SOLs.”
The reviews will likely improve schools when the standardized testing begins.
