Last weekend I went to the Drake concert at D.A.R Constitution Hall with my friend Stephen Cook. I got him third row tickets to the rap concert for his birthday. We went to Subway to grab a quick dinner and then walked eight blocks in the rain to get to the venue. By the time we reached the front steps we were soaked but it did not matter because we were about to see our favorite rapper up close and personal.
As the lights dimmed for the opening act, Tyga from Young Money, the crowd rose to their feet and started dancing to the beat of the base. He was a great performer and he hyped everyone up for the main performance of Drake. The intermission between the opener and Drake’s performance seemed eternal because everyone was anticipating the Canadian rapper to come up on stage and blow everyone away. As the lights dimmed and the music started playing the crowd went crazy.
Drake came out dressed in a red varsity jacket, a white T-shirt and jeans, and rapped in an all white microphone. Everyone was dancing a rapping along to the words. Stephen and I took so many pictures and videos and were just amazed at how close he was to us. I felt like I could reach out and touch him. He was an amazing performer and he made sure to make eye contact with his audience so that he was truly connecting with everyone and not just a celebrity up onstage trying to get paid.
His performance was one of my favorite I have ever seen. He had great stage presence, could both sing and rap, and he knew how to make his audience feel special and important. That is a night I will never forget and a performer who will never be forgotten.
