Opening up a dusty drawer, pulling out a crisp pair of shorts or a tee shirt, and stepping out of the house without a jacket are some of the telltale signs that spring is in the air. This past week, Annandale got a taste of the warmer weather with unusually high temperatures. Beginning on Feb. 14 with a breezy afternoon in the mid 60’s, and continuing through Feb. 18 with temperatures climbing close to 70, students were beginning to wonder if their calendars were wrong.
Throughout the hallways, countless students were spotted wearing warm weather staples.
“It’s nice to be able to walk out of the house without a jacket,” sophomore Gunnar Thompson said. The luxury of walking to a trailer class without having to put on a coat in the hallway or carry one around all day is seldom experienced during the winter months. Wearing shorts was the most drastic change that many students made to their wardrobes last week.
“I’m wearing shorts because it’s hot outside,” sophomore Paul Helfgott said. Others were merely adapting to the changing styles.
“I’m wearing shorts to fit in,” sophomore Austin Chavez said. “I didn’t like being the weird kid who wears shorts when it’s cold.”
Unfortunately for these excited students, the next week took a turn for the worse. On Monday Feb. 21st, temperatures dropped throughout the day and led to a wintry mix overnight. School opened two hours late on Feb. 22nd due to the ice and snow, and winter was dragged out longer.
“The weather is bipolar,” freshman Destiny Anderson said. “I went from shorts to khakis.”
With temperatures back down near freezing, and not expected to rise above 50 degrees in the coming week, students have to switch back to the familiar routine of bundling up, braving the wind, and waiting out the long winter.
