Flip flops: a popular shoe choice of warm-weathered months, and even a more popular place to find potentially lethal germs. According to research conducted at the University of Miami, over 18,000 germs, including bacteria from fecal matter and respiratory germs, were found on one pair of flip flops alone.
Having an open cut or blister can allow access for these germs to enter the body and cause all sorts of problems.
Another pair of shoes was worn around New York’s subway stations and inside public restrooms. 13,900 more germs were found than from the previous study.
To reduce the risk of becoming infected by these illnesses, limit the amount of handling shoes and wash hands frequently. Removing shoes before walking around the house will prevent the transfer of germs to the carpet and floor of the home.
