“Having won our first scrimmage and tying the second, we’re showing promise and we can hope to go far this season, hopefully winning the district championship,” said sophomore Anna Salamon, “individually, I hope to grow into a versatile player and learn new positions. I usually play goalie but I’m glad I was pushed to learn to play midfield and wing.”
The Atoms won their first scrimmage against the South Lakes Seahawks, 2-0. One goal was scored by senior Ainsley Bolin, and the other scored by sophomore Alina Rimando. Their second scrimmage showed a fraction of the same success, tying 2-2 against the West Potomac Wolverines. In these scrimmages, 1 of the Atom’s goals was scored by sophomore Anna Salamon, and the other by senior Erin Hanlen.
“From the scrimmages that we’ve played thus far, we have worked really well as a team, so as the season goes on, we’re going to just continue to improve,” said senior Erin Hanlen, “I also hope that we can go far in the playoffs, get to the district championship, and hopefully even win it.”
This season, the Women’s Varsity Soccer team only has 9 seniors, compared to the men’s 16. The team lost a lot of seniors and key players last year, but they’ll have to move forward. Some players will be forced to take on a leadership role. Having this many first year varsity players will mean there’s much chemistry to be built. While this year’s newly added varsity players are very talented, they will have to adjust to the flow and pace of varsity soccer.
The team has already started building chemistry, “We do a lot of team bonding and team dinners to help build chemistry, especially so early in the season,” senior Sara Nagle said.
“As this is my first year playing varsity, and also playing a new position, I’ve had to learn a lot and make adjustments,” Salamon said.
Overall, the team is looking promising and is looking forward to another great season.
