The Atoms winter track season will begin tryouts this week with high hopes of a great season coupled with a large new runner turnout.
Prior to the season’s startup, some upperclassmen runners have been hitting the track in preparation for tryouts.
Varsity runner Senior Logan Noyes said, “The returning team has been practicing in the offseason along with playing multiple other sports to stay in the best shape possible.”
Noyes is a well respected runner and has taken his skill on the track well past the regular season.
When asked about what he hopes to achieve in his final year on the team, he said, “my personal goal this track season is to qualify for the state championship in high jump and some other events, I really want to push myself extra hard since it is my last year.”
Noyes isn’t the only one with a heart set goal. Another well admired runner looks to make her trip to states.
Varsity runner Senior Sage Nagle has been a renowned member of the track team and is very excited and prepared for this new season.
Nagle said, “I’ve been doing offseason workouts to get well conditioned. My personal goals this season are to improve on my 55 meter hurdles and perfect my form.”
Nagle would also like to make a run past the regular season especially since it is her last year.
Looking at the depth of the team, they expect many new runners each year, as track offers a variety of different events where newcomers can try to find their best place on the team.
“There is such a variety of events almost everyone can find something” Said Nagle.
Unfortunately the team lost some key runners due to graduation, however, that allows for the underclassmen and the now senior runners to step up and take charge.
Noyes said, “We lost some big members of our team from graduating last year but this season we have a good amount of returning upperclassmen so I expect the team to perform fairly well.”
These two respected seniors have good expectations for this winter season’s turnout, and look to give this last season everything they have got.
“I am excited to see how the season goes. As a senior I also look to see who will take over the team next year. The team certainly has some talent from last year and I think our team looks to pass that skill down onto the seasons to come.” Noyes added.
Overall the team has a lot of skill with key leaders like Nagle and Noyes. They expect a lot of new runners and a lot of improvement individually this upcoming season.
If you’re interested in winter track, tryouts start Tuesday Nov. 19.
CHEER
They have already concluded their fall season which went very well. The team now prepares for its upcoming winter season.
Zooming in, here is a little backstory to what the cheer team entails.
Aside from the cheering on the sidelines that you see during football and basketball games, the cheer team competes with other schools on the mat.
This is known as the “mat season” in which girls and boys show off their tumbles, aerials, along with many other stunts.
Looking back on the fall season, the team performed well on the mat. Senior Nuwame Seyoum said, “I think the team was great this year, it definitely had some very determined girls and boys who made this season a lot of fun and worth all the work.”
Senior Haja Janjua said, “I think we did an incredible job putting our hard work out there because we hit zero on the mat.”
The fall season was a success and brought the team very close together as everyone brought their best effort to the mat.
Cheer requires good trust in your team which builds strong relationships and a good team bond.
Now the team is transitioning to the winter season which has Janjua very excited.
Scoping out this upcoming winter season, Janjua said, “I think the winter season is going to be incredible as well and probably going to meet more new people who want to try out for the winter season.”
The past season had some great successors, but Seyoum mentions that there is certainly improvement the team needs.
“A strength would be that as a team we were very resilient and didn’t give up, we definitely worked towards our goals. An area that needs work would be our team’s focus. I think that we had maybe too much fun.”
“The strengths we have is the passion for the sport and how we go about doing things and putting our hard and efforts into it.” Effort is a strong point for the cheer team. “Some weaknesses we can work on are probably just adding more cheers.” Janjua said.
Similarly to football, the squad cheers alongside the boys basketball team at their games.
Junior starting point guard Nathan Pewett said, “I like the crowds at our games and the cheer team does an amazing job hyping up the stands.”
Seyoum said, “The games are always fun and the team has a good time supporting our boys basketball players.”
Overall the team is priming up for the boys home basketball games and is looking forward to competing against other schools as well. Janjua and Seyoum both have high hopes for the team as the winter season starts up.
