The Atoms Varsity field hockey team ended the regular season with a 7-0 record in the district and are currently ranked as #1.
The team is playing in the district tournament this week, where they have a chance to reach their season-long goal: to be district champions.
“I don’t want to say like, ‘we’re going to win,’ or ‘we’re not going to win,’” said Senior Arisel Aguilera-Sanchez, “but I’m glad that we’re first seed, and I think that if we continue to work hard, we will see good results.”
Although the regular season district games ended for the field hockey team last Wednesday with their mercy rule 7-1 win against the Mount Vernon Majors on senior night, the Atoms continue to practice.
“We worked really hard this season, but it’s not over yet,” said Aguilera, “’I’m really proud of us just like working together and coming together as a team, and it showed throughout the season.”
For seniors, a district championship title would mean a lot, “If we were to win districts during my senior year that would mean a lot to me,” said Aquilera, “It would be a great way to end the last season of my high school field hockey career, and would be a great accomplishment for us as a team.”
Fellow senior Tabusom Marzi agrees that the district tournament is a must-win for the team, “We were very close to winning last year and it hurt us a lot, but I believe that we’re in a much better place this year,” said Marzi, “we took all of that pain from losing and we are turning it into motivation to do better this year,”
The team lost the championship in overtime last year.
Varsity Head Coach Corin Uviedo led the team to a district champion title in 2022, “I think we’ve had a great season so far, I’m really proud of our team, and I hope we do well this week.”
2022 was Coach Uviedo’s first year as Varsity head coach of the Atoms, “I have lots of experience coaching field hockey,” said Coach Uviedo, who also coaches club field hockey for her four daughters, “I have to say that this year we have an exceptional team, and have the potential to go very far in postseason play.”
Coach Uviedo has a daughter on the team, “We’ve worked hard and we are very fortunate that we get another shot this year,” said Junior Callia Uviedo, “we have to stay strong, calm, and keep our heads in the game.”
Callia Uviedo is a Division I commit to The College of William and Mary, “this week is the most important week for us because it’s when we’ll see if we can reach our goal of being the district champions.”
“I would love for our team to have another district championship title,” said Callia Uviedo. Callia Uviedo won District Player of the Year in both her freshman and sophomore years, and was ranked best in the region in 2023, as well as 2nd team All State, and All Met Honorable Mention.
“Winning Player of the Region would be so amazing because it would mean that all my hard work has paid off,” said Callia Uviedo.
Varsity goalie Coach Jenny Kang also witnessed the Atoms domination in 2022 and hopes to win the title again, “The girls have the heart and the hustle to play the field hockey game they know how to play,” said Kang,
“I am also proud of how these athletes commit themselves to improve as more skilled,” Kang added, “they are disciplined players with integrity and respect for the game.”
Junior Sofia Saavedra also has confidence in the team’s abilities, “this regular season was really amazing.”
Saavedra compared this season to last, “we’ve never gained this much confidence and momentum in the regular season before, so I’m excited for this week,”
As Captain, Saavedra has experience as a leader and motivator for the team, “it hasn’t been easy, but we’ve been putting in the work, and it showed off,
“Our results so far are really what we wanted to see, and it’s because of all of our hard work at practices,” said Saavedra.
How they do in the district tournament will determine their seeding for regionals, so it’s important that the Atoms continue to do well this week.
The Atoms will host the district semi-final on Wednesday as well as the district final on Friday, if they win the semi-final.
