The Atoms Track and Field team are closing in on an impressive winter season, being the overall winners of a few meets, and seeing many of their runners set new personal bests. For runners, hitting a new personal best is a great achievement, and they use these to push themselves even harder with the hopes of setting an even better personal record.
As described by Sophomore Claire Delaney, this season has been very, “Productive,” for the track team. They saw many improvements this season, “We’ve improved a lot,” added Delaney, who is a runner.
There are many different events to compete in for track, from jumping and throwing to sprinting and distance, the different groups of athletes all experience different levels of competition, and some events are doing better than others. “Jumps and Hurdles are all doing well this season,” Said junior Sara Nagle, who is a thrower.
So far, The Atoms have found great success in 4x200m relay, a race consisting of 4 runners sprinting 200m segments and passing a baton, and high jump. As described by Junior Jakob McElveen, “The 4x200m relay is probably the strongest event this year.”
The Atoms success in High Jump events is led by Junior Teagan Scott Daniels, who at the time of writing, is currently first place in the district.
The Atoms are aiming to close the season out with high placing in regional and state competitions. For track and field, runners qualify individually based on their times in order to compete in these races. The Atoms have a big hole to fill after nationals qualifier Miles Lanham graduated last year. The Atoms look to hold their name in national competitions with the 4x200m relay team this year.
With the season coming to an end, the track team is getting ready to complete their goal, “Our current goal is to make it to at least districts,” said sophomore Tea Akl.
Like Akl, Sophomore Quinn Mongold agrees that the training they received throughout the season is going to be useful for their events in districts. The team has been working towards the district competition all season long, “We continued to build on our skills and mainly focused on districts,” Said Mongold, who also said that throughout the season the coaches, “Continued to encourage and push us for Districts”
With district competition right around the corner, the team hopes to finish the season at their best, “Districts push us to finish the season strong,” said sophomore Julia Albetani.
The track team hopes to do well in districts and complete the season with more wins for all events.
