Lacrosse ramps up for 2022
The 2022 lacrosse season is around the corner, with tryouts beginning yesterday on the stadium field. The tryouts began at 8:30 a.m. and will run until 10:30 a.m.
“The expectations for the season are to build off of the successes that we were having at the end of last season,” head coach Bill Maglisceau said. “Since we’re in the new conference, we are hoping to be in the top four.”
The team has not had a consistent green day or practice schedule to this point, however, captains Connor Lape and Alex Silva have organized captain workouts for the team.
The workouts generally last around two hours after school, with drills focusing on stat drill passes, shooting on the run, and some ground ball drills.
“I believe that these drills and the entire workout plan that we have worked hard to create will be vital for the foundation of our team this season,” junior captain Connor Lape said.
Lape has also designed lifting programs for lacrosse players, emphasizing getting stronger to see on field results.
“It’s important for our players to stay active and lift in the offseason,” Lape said. “I’ve been following my own workout plan for almost two weeks now and am seeing the results so I can’t wait to share it with the team and see how they can grow.”
The team will lean on several underclassmen stepping up this season, including sophomore Christian Pinto. Pinto has done a good job in both stepping up on the field and off, recruiting new players to the team.
Pinto is one of several JV players who are expected to step up and be starters for the Varsity team this season.
“We’ll have some sophomores be legit contributors and heavy lifters for our team,” Maglisceau said.
The Atoms will begin competitive play on March 5, with a series of scrimmages against out of district opponents. Scrimmages are currently scheduled vs. C.D. Hylton, Rock Ridge and Meridian.
The team will kick off its 11 game regular season schedule in their home opener against Park View on March 14.
In their first season as a team in the National District, the team will be put to the test against a wider range of opponents.
With new contributors and good leadership from captains, the team can make a splash in the district tournament which is set to take place from May 6 to May 13.
