Atoms Baseball clinches #1 seed in District Tournament
The Atoms Baseball team took both games of a double-header on May 31, and also clinched the first seed in the Gunston District tournament.
The Atoms faced off against the Alexandria City Titans twice to make up from two rain-outs over the weekend. Winning Game 1 by a score of 5-4 and Game 2 by a score of 13-2.
Senior Danny Salisbury pitched 7 innings in Game 1, striking out 11 batters, and giving up 1 earned run and 4 runs to earn the victory.
“I tried to keep the same approach as any other game despite pitching Friday before the rain delay and again today,” Salisbury said. “I knew what worked against them on Friday and I tried to use that to my advantage today and put our team in a position to win, and we did that.”
Senior Spencer Robson tallied 2 RBI’s on a walk-off double in the 7th to win the game and clinch first place in the District.
“It was an amazing feeling after the hit, seeing both runs scored, to know that we had not only won the game but had clinched the district and earned a bye,” Robson said. “Credit to Danny for keeping us in the game and the guys ahead of me getting on base and giving me an opportunity to win us the game.”
Seniors Spencer Robson went 5 innings in Game 2, giving up 2 hits and 1 run on 5 strikeouts to earn the win. Senior Orlando Torres came out of the bullpen in the 6th to close the game out for the Atoms.
Senior Rylie Zimmerman hit a 3-run home run and Senior T.J. Hutnan drove in 2 runs on an RBI double.
The Atoms finish the regular season with an 8-4 record and 7-1 in district play, sweeping every team in the district except West Potomac.
With the win, the Atoms have earned a first round bye, and will await the winner of a lower seeded tiebreaker and play-in game before their semifinal matchup on June 7.
“Now we use this week and prepare for the tournament as we have done all season,” Junior Zack Pacak said. “We have a great team and hard-working players, I’m excited for the opportunity to go out and compete for a Gunston District Championship with my brothers.”
