Track team looks to continue success through district tournament
The AHS winter track season is coming to a close, and there are only 15 days left in the season before the district tournament.
AHS track is currently preparing for the tournament as districts come closer.
“We’ve normally been doing three workouts a week,” junior Nick Salazar said, “In between those we do long runs anywhere from about five to seven miles.”
In general, the AHS track team has had a good winter season and has remained consistent throughout the entirety of the season.
The first invitational started the season off strong.
In the Potomac River Holiday Invitational on December 28, the boys’ team took 3rd place in the 4x200m relay as a player on boys took 2nd place in the 3200m run.
Girls took 3rd place in the 55m hurdles and achieved 4th place in the 4x200m relay.
After the first invitational, the AHS track team has been able to keep consistent with their performances.
In the Northern Virginia TJMS meet on Jan.3, the girls took 1st-4th place in the 55-meter dash, 1st place in the 500-meter dash, the 1600 meter run, 55-meter hurdles, 4×200 meter relay, 4×400 meter relay, and the high jump.
Boys took 1st place in the 1600 meter run and high jump. They took 2nd place 4×200 and 4×400 meter relays.
“This season is going along really nice and we’ve all put in the work,” sophomore Michael Bekele said, “I think that we as a team will do good in the districts and we will be prepared.”
In the most recent invitational, AHS competed with 100 schools at the invitational.
Boys took 9th place in the high jump and impressively took 6th place in the 4×800 meter relay with a time of 8:39.3.
The girls placed 15th in 55-meter hurdles.
“We will do well,” Salazar continued, “There’s definitely more competition in the district, but I think we will be prepared for it.”
The next meet for winter track will take place at Thomas Jefferson Middle School in Alexandria on Jan. 24.
AHS will look to continue their success at that meet before the district tournament.
The district tournament stretches over two days on Jan. 31 and Feb.1. at Episcopal HS.
