English teacher Brian Aldenderfer has been named the new head golf coach to replace Richard McCormack who is stepping down to an assistant position.
“I really look forward to stepping up to the challenge of coaching and managing the team,” Aldenderfer said. “I want to share my knowledge with the student athletes.”
Aldenderfer has ten years of prior experience and due to his love of the sport, he has no problem with leading the team. He frequently shoots in the 80’s off of the white tees. He applied for the position and was recently awarded the job by athletic director Karl Kerns.
Team members have mixed feelings about the coaching change.
“I will miss Coach McCormack,” freshman Michael McLean said. “Also, I know that there were many lessons that he had not yet been able to teach us.”
Others are embracing this switch as the start of a new era in AHS history.
“I will definitely miss Coach McCormack next year,” junior Carl Samuelson said. “But I think having the golf coach at AHS next year will have its benefits.”
Golf is an out-of-season sport, meaning that players improve most throughout the rest of the year. McCormack hopes that Aldenderfer will be able to see team members during school days and encourage them to practice.
A date has not been decided yet, but there will be an interest meeting for everybody interested in playing golf during the 2013 fall season. Regardless of skill level, Aldenderfer hopes that all will attend and eventually try out.
