Just a week into the season, the boys varsity tennis team is already facing live action. Their first scrimmage was held yesterday at AHS versus the Hayfield Hawks beginning at four p.m. Being so early in the season, the date did not affect the Atoms as they won seven matches to two.
“I thought we would do well because we had a lot of returning, experienced players,” tennis coach Hassan Mims said.
With six returning players from last year’s varsity team, Mims hoped for victory. Key team members that helped the Atoms achieve victory were Todd Le and Alex Parrado, both sophomores. Le won both his singles and doubles matches and Parrado won only his singles.
“I won my match and I felt good about it afterwards,” Le said.
This year, the team was hit with a last minute coaching change. Former coach Kathleen Gould has taken a leave of absence from AHS and has been replaced by Mims who also coaches the varsity girls. Players appreciate what Mims has brought to the team from his previous years of coaching.
“So far, he’s done really well,” Parrado said. “His attitude’s really good and he makes everyone work hard and get motivated.”
The next scrimmage will be held on March 4 against Marshall HS with their first match being a week after.
