After a 1-8 loss to South County on April 13, the girls tennis team hosted R.E. Lee on April 15 hoping to win their third match of the season. Despite missing two out of their top six singles players, as well as having to re-arrange all three doubles teams, the Atoms were victorious in a close match, 5-4. This victory came after a 4-5 lost at the hands of the Lancers on March 25.
They were able to notch three wins in singles, courtesy of senior Torie Deible (No. 2) who won 10-8, sophomore Alexa Lafferty (No. 5) who won 10-2 and senior Samantha Lugar (No. 6) who won 10-7.
With the score 3-3 after singles, the Atoms were able to take both the number one and number three doubles matches. The newly formed pair of Deible and sophomore Bonne Clark easily defeated the Lancers 10-3, while juniors Lisbeth Espinoza and Neha Sohail topped their opponents in a tiebreaker by a score of 7-5.
The Atoms will play three matches this week against West Potomac on April 20, at Lake Braddock on April 21 and home against W.T. Woodson on April 23.
“We really want to play better against Woodson and Lake Braddock since we lost to them both 0-9 in our first match. We still want to have a better record than last year and finish on a good note,” said Lugar.
