With a strong head start in the beginning of the varsity softball season, the team has already proven their skills in the pr-season. Their first win was against Woodbridge High School 5-2 on March 10. They continued winning in their first game with a 21-1 vistory over Falls Church on March 17.
“The season is starting off very well, we look and play like a strong team this year,” said second baseman junior Brittney Terry. The girls work on their skills by practicing all week and focusing on a variety of skills like hitting and base running.
“We expect to play very well this season,” said third basemen Casey Fait. “I’m really looking forward to our future games because I think we can go really far this year.” The girls most recent challenge was a double header on Saturday, March 20 at Hayfield High School against Bishop Ireton and Hayfield.
The starting infield players consist of Jessica Hotter at shortstop, Isabelle Yaroch at pitcher, Kelly Hughes at first base, Brittney Terry at second base and Casey Fait at third base. Ana Alana and Sabrina Hassan are the only two seniors on the varsity team this year, so very few players will be lost next season. That means next year softball could continue to have a strong team. “The season has started off very well, and I see us going far and competing for districts,” said head coach Jennifer Hall. Both players and coaches are very optimistic about the season.
“Our team is very close, and part of what makes us such a strong team is our teamwork,” said sophomore Justine Niner. It is clearly evident in practices and on the scoreboard that the girls work together well and their hard work pays off.
The junior varsity team has yet to play an official game, but won a scrimmage against Woodbridge 17-2. Their first game will be an away against Lee High School. The team mainly consists of returning sophomore players with a few juniors and freshmen, so junior varsity has a very experienced team this season.
AHS softball has many games left in the season, each one presenting a different challenge for the girls. The team hopes to play their best in each game and end with a successful season.
