Inclement weather affects spring sports

Mar. 20 was the official start of spring, but for AHS spring sports teams, spring has come late.

The official kick-off of spring sports began on Tuesday, Feb. 25, a week full of sunny yet cold weather, but still playable for all outdoor sports. However, the following week was not as promising. Due to inclement weather including snow, rain and hail, spring sports teams were forced inside for all practices.

The practice schedule for all teams was divided up into both the main and auxiliary gyms. The time range of each practice was about an hour and a half for all teams. Both  boys’ and girls’ JV and Varsity teams, for six different sports, met on the same days with only two gyms available.

Not only was the practice schedule of these teams affected, but also their ability to play in games. Over the course of 11+ inclement weather days being used all throughout the month of March, game schedules for all teams were affected. Most teams had all of their scrimmages cancelled and were forced to jump right into their district games with very little practice and experience.

“[The weather] has definitely affected our team because we haven’t gotten much of a chance to utilize our field,” junior Moesha Fares said. “And it has affected the quality of our practices and our experience on the field.”

Since all district games need to be played, teams have been forced to play multiple games a week. This forces teams to give up practice that they could use to prepare for their opponent. Most teams have had more games than practices so far this season.

“[The inclement weather] has made our schedule a lot more crowded; we are going to have to play 3-4 games a week now,” sophomore Aaron Boyd said.

With all the winter weather carrying over into the spring sports season, it will continue to be an adventure for athletes as they try to complete their season on a decent schedule.
