Olympic Medalist drops out of the Olympics
Recuperating from a reconstructive knee surgery in February 2013, Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn assured the public she would be ready for the 2014 Sochi Olympics. Vonn began to face harsh setbacks in her career. On November 19, ten days before Vonn was schedule to compete for the first time since the prior injury, she crashed in training. Thus causing a partial tear in her right ACL. This became too much for the skier to handle. One month prior to the opening ceremonies, she announced that she will not be able to compete in Sochi.
Vonn stated “ [she] did everything [she] could possibly do to get strong enough to overcome having no ACL.” Unfortunately, the reality of the injury became “ too unstable to compete at the [Olympic] level.
“I feel bad that she won’t be able to compete” junior Hamid Raza said, “ she wasted four years of training and is now unable to compete.”
Sources say that Vonn will shortly undergo knee surgery again. They also state that once she recovers, she plans to return to the skiing circuit and try again.
“It’s not really a big deal because she can try again in the next 4 years,” said sophomore Ananda Poudel.
Vonn is one of the most accomplished U.S. ski racer in history; being the first Olympic downhill gold medal for an American woman. She currently has 59 victories in the World Cup tour and is three wins short of tying the all-time record for women’s downhill.
