Fall sports show their support for Breast Cancer Awareness

It’s that time of year again, the time for the Atoms to suit up in their pink Jerseys and help support the fight against breast cancer.

It has been an AHS tradition for the past few years for both the field hockey and volleyball teams to host a game in October which supports the fight against breast cancer. Both teams hold bake sales before the game or during the week to raise money that goes to the cause. Both teams also spread awareness by wearing pink shirts the day of the game to advertise the games to their fellow students.

“It’s so important because we’re helping people recover and funding research to help find a cure” junior Beza Yoseph said.

This year both breast cancer games will be held against T.C. Williams high school; field hockey will be playing their game on October 11 and volleyball on October 16.

However, the volleyball team is going above and beyond this year to raise money by having a car wash on October 5, along with the bake sale that is held before the game. The baked goods are all made by the girls themselves and all the money raised is going to the Dig Pink foundation.

“The car wash is big for us because were raising money for a good cause and all the money we make goes straight to the Dig Pink foundation” junior Kathy Nguyen said.

Adding to the volleyball teams traditions, each member of the varsity team selects a guy to be their “Dig Pink Boy”, these boys come to the game sporting a neon pink shirt with a team members name on it to show support for the girls on the night of their game.

“Im excited to be on the court with the girls and be apart of the team for the night. And it’s for a really good cause” junior Jason Pratt said.

Volleyball doesn’t stop there: during the school day the team and their “Dig Pink Boy” wear their Dink Pink shirts to school to draw attention to the game that night. Along with that, the team hangs up flyers around the school which tells students and staff that if they wear their own pink attire to the game they will get in for $1.

“[Dig Pink] is so fun because there’s a lot of people there, the crowd gets hyped and its all for a good cause” junior Kristel Franjie said.

Make sure to come support the Atoms girls in each of their Breast Cancer Awareness games.
