As it now stretches into the beginning of September, sometimes it can be difficult to find inspiration for fun things to do to without becoming depressed that school has started. Luckily, the D.C. area has some great options for outings that can still be enjoyed through September, while the nice weather is still with us. If you’re looking for an outdoor adventure, a cool exhibit, or just a fun place to see, look no further than these ideas:
1. Stand Up Paddle Boarding
This trendy and emerging activity has been cropping up around the Potomac River in the past year. It is a low-key version of surfing done on flat, still water. Paddlers stand on a flat, wide board and use a double sided paddle to maneuver. It is fairly easy to get the hang of for people who know how to bike, ski or are reasonably athletic, but beginners can also check out this guide. The closest place to rent paddleboards is Pohick Bay, a regional park in Lorton on the Potomac. Boards can be rented for around $9 per hour. More info can be found here.
2. First Ladies Dresses
If you find history boring, this unique exhibit may change your mind. The Smithsonian Museum of American History has a collection of dresses from the First Ladies of the White House, dating back past Mary Todd Lincoln. You can view firsthand the fahsoins of the past, as well as the shoes, coats, jewelry, and china that the First Ladies owned. If you have not yet checked out this exhibit, it is definitely a must for anyone in the area. Don’t forget, museum admission is always free.
3. Woody’s Ice Cream
This family-owned ice cream parlor in Old Town Fairfax offers some of the best soft serve in the area. Their menu options are limited, but the taste is creamy, cool and sweet, offering the perfect refreshing feeling. This place is cash only, so be prepared ahead of time, and expect lines on weekends, as they are very popular! Location: 10435 North Street Fairfax, VA 22030
