NEHS Atom Buddies
From November to December, National English Honor Society works with Annandale Terrace Elementary School students in an afterschool program. Members sign up to talk with students during their snack time and tutor them in whatever subjects they are struggling with.“Not only does it boost engagement within our school and community, but it also provides some relaxation for high schoolers,” senior and Vice President of NEHS Margarete Tran said.
SSHS clothing drive
Social Studies Honor Society is running a winter clothing drive until December 20th in partnership with the Patrick Henry Family Shelter. Anyone is welcome to donate new or gently used warm items, however, they request donations of hats, gloves, and long johns. The donation box is located in the back corner of room 292. “It would be lovely for you to donate,” junior and SSHS president Lizzie Gronberg said.
Basketball – Readers are Leaders
All levels of boys and girls basketball participate in Readers are Leaders, where players practice reading and writing with kindergarten students at Braddock Elementary. Teams rotate visiting several times a week, pairing players with the same student each time. “Peer tutoring from someone closer to your age is helpful because it feels less daunting and more connected,” said junior and girls Varsity player Matilda Moreland.
Key Club
Key Club is helping the community this holiday season by helping to plan district-wide and AHS focused events such as creating food gifts for staff and more! Such events have been taking place since December 9th and will continue until winter break. “[The events] benefit the community as a whole, by supporting those who are in need, [and] by strengthening community bonds as well as staff appreciation,” senior and Key Club President Kanica Sum said.
