The class of 2026 student government has been working diligently to plan an exciting upcoming community event called “Blizzard Breakfast,” to raise money for their senior activities next year, such as Prom.
The Class of 2026 will hold a pancake breakfast for families in the community with a $5 flat admission fee on Jan. 25, from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the AHS cafeteria. Fun activities will be available for guests to enjoy, such as crafts, a story corner, music, and photos with Olaf from Disney’s Frozen, who will make a special appearance.
“I feel like there are not a lot of events for families as a whole to attend. So, [this event will allow] students of all ages to come together and have fun,” junior and class of 2026 president Téa Akl said.
Co-sponsor of the class of 2026 and Photography 1-4 and 3D Art 2-4 teacher, Erin Mahoney, brought this event from the school she previously taught at, but changed a few things. They renamed the event from “Breakfast with Santa,” to encourage inclusivity.
With the help of the class officers, Mahoney selected the stations they will be running, during their frequent PrideTime meetings, from observing what has worked best at her old school, and at other events she has attended.
“I’ve seen that crafts are a big hit, everyone wants to do the crafts. Having a little movie corner set up? Not so much,” Mahoney said. “The kids that are coming to participate like the interaction, so that’s why stories work well: because it is calmer, and the kids can sit, but they’re getting the interaction with the high school student,” she added.
Each class of 2026 officers will host a table but they will most likely get additional help from the Leadership students, and members of the National Art Honor Society who will help to run crafts and face painting.
While the class of 2026 hopes to fundraise a good amount of money with this event, they are also interested in helping to pioneer more annual community events.
“I will admit I am a little worried about the turnout, considering that this sort of event is brand new,” junior and class of 2026 vice president Jasmin Dinh said. “I hope that on top of raising a substantial amount of money to put towards our Prom fund, the class of 2026 will also be able to spread the joy of the winter season to the larger Annandale community through Blizzard Breakfast,” she added.
The class of 2026 plans to advertise this event on their social media, in the Annandale Community Insider, and with flyers around the school. An Amazon Wishlist will also be posted, which they encourage families to use as donations for the event since they have a very limited budget, most of which they are saving toward their class Prom.
