After a trial lasting more than five weeks, a federal jury has sided with FCPS following a lawsuit that entailed a woman suing the county for allegedly mishandling her reports of sexual assault.
The 24 year old, identified only as B.R., claims she was repeatedly raped 12 years ago, while she was a student at Rachel Carson Middle School in Herndon, Virginia.
The case is one of several lawsuits against Northern Virginia school districts involving sexual assaults, which VA Governor Glenn Youngkin has highlighted as VA schools’ lack of concern for student safety.
The victim said FCPS acted indifferent towards her outreach, ignored her, and even retaliated against her.
FCPS has denied all claims and stated she was making it up. During the trial, it was brought up that B.R.’s claims had significantly changed over the years, and screenshots of private messages had indicated that her and her alleged rapist were in a relationship, that the sex was consensual, and that her claims of rape began when he broke up with her.
When this evidence was shown, the victim began crying on the stand.
B.R. has stated that she expects to pursue further legal options.
