FCPS Budget Proposed for 2024
The FCPS budget for 2024 has recently been released, sparking satisfaction and frustration within the community at the same time.
The 2024 budget consists of a $3.5 billion school operating fund, which is a $249.6 million or 7.6% increase from the 2023 budget.
One of the counties biggest advertisements within the new proposal is a 3% market scale
“cost of living” raise for all FCPS employees. Despite the $80.9 million commitment, there are still questions surrounding FCPS teacher and staff salaries. FCPS is still below the local school division midpoint for teacher salaries at 94%.
The budget also includes a 1% retention bonus for all staff hired during the 2023 FY, although considering the lowered 2023 teacher salaries, questions surround whether this is enough of a jump.
Other important factors within the budget include Superintendent Michelle Reid’s commitment to equitable access to literacy, support for students with special education needs, and funding for advanced academic programs.
FCPS is still recovering from the Covid-19 pandemic and its impact on the county and it’s community, and as schools are in more need of quality teachers than ever, it is imperative that the county continue its efforts to attract and retain staff.
