NHS accepting new members
The AHS chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS) is accepting applications. Students in grades 10 to 12 are eligible to apply.
“I think it is important for the students at AHS to apply to the NHS to be recognized as outstanding individuals,” said John Ellenberger, one of three NHS sponsors and director of student activities. “We have amazing students at Annandale and we think it is important that each one of them is recognized.”
Founded in 1921, the NHS is a worldwide organization dedicated to elevating schools’ commitment to the values of scholarship, service, leadership, and character, and recognizing and further developing these qualities in students.
“I’m applying because I really love to get involved in clubs and activities at Annandale, so I think it would be a fun and interesting addition to the clubs I’m already in,” sophomore Ellie Davis said.
To apply, students need to complete four assignments, all found in the NHS Google classroom; a personal essay, an information sheet of your accomplishments, a teacher recommendation, and a Google form where you submit your online signature. Current NHS members only need to fill out the online signature form. The deadline to complete these is Sun., Feb. 7.
“I’m applying so I can be an active member in our school. It’s important because they learn strong values like service and leadership which is crucial for the real world,” sophomore Rahiel Berhe said.
A panel of teachers will review the applications. The panel will look at the whole student: GPA, leadership roles and service to the community. Students that are accepted will be notified around the first week in March.
However, as this year has been like no other, the application process has been eased with students in mind. For example, the essay needs to be one page instead of two. For members, the required amount of community service is now five hours instead of ten.
Ellenberger encourages all to apply.
“The hours each of these students put into their academics, leading and serving our community and having outstanding character should be brought to light,” he said. “These characteristics must be present to be accepted into this society.”
Students with any questions about the application process can contact any of the three sponsors: John Ellenberger ([email protected]), Bryan Molle ([email protected]) or Jennifer Cory ([email protected]).
