America still needs changing when it comes to holidays
Ever since America has first been founded it has been a Christian country. According to History.com, a large amount of immigrants first fled to America in the 1880’s. Afterwards, new religions were introduced and little did we know change would slowly start developing, but is the change we made enough?
The Holidays are right around the corner and we try to be respectful for those who celebrate a different holiday or for those of a different religion. Although we have made slight changes to accommodate those who don’t celebrate Christmas, we still hear Christmas music playing in the hallways and see Christmas decorations displayed in the halls.
To be frank, Christmas is a very well known holiday and we sometimes tend to overshadow or ignore other holidays around this time. For example, we know that Hanukkah and Kwanzaa are also celebrated in this month(December) do you really know why it’s celebrated and the history behind it?Unless you celebrate another holiday besides Christmas, I think not.
I don’t want to just talk about the negatives because we have made progress when it comes to awareness of other holidays and religions. We’ve since changed “ Christmas Break” to “Holiday Break” on our school calendar and we’ve labeled “Easter” as a “Holiday”. Though we’ve made these slight changes, kids in elementary school still color in candy canes, and decorate their Christmas paper trees. It seems that we still have work to do.
