Green Atoms learn about bees
The Green Atoms club has taken the initiative to spread awareness of the environment and why is important to take care of it.
The Club has created “Wild Annandale Series” which consist of different guest speakers each month to address important environmental issues that affects everyone and the environment.
“Wild Annandale tries to make students aware of their immediate environment, such as the trees that surround the school, the birds flying over them, the bees who are pollinating their food etc,” Green Atoms sponsor Anne Brosnan said.
To kick off the month, the first speakers of the Wild Annandale series was a local bee keeper, Martha Kiene who is the Outreach Coordinator and VP of Northern Virginia Beekeepers Association.
According to the club sponsor, the main reason why they decided to invite a beekeeper as a guest speakers is because of the Bees being added to the Endangered Species list.
“I wanted to invite her since the bees are super important to our environment and our food supply,” Brosnan said.
The club met in the library from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. on october five. Around 30 students attended the event.
Students had the opportunity to learn about the importance of pollinators in the environment and how pollinators are disappearing such as the honey bees.
Aside from explaining students about the importance of honey bees, she brought a hive of bees so students could see them and learn about them. w
Student discusses what he learned at the event.
“I learned that honey bees are the only bees that store honey, and that bees pollinate flowers so we can have food and without them we would not have a variety of food,” senior Kevin huynh.
The club discusses future events for the rest of the year.
“We will have four more speakers in the upcoming months,” senior VP of green Atoms Michelle Hong said.
