A Day with the Amish
Juniors and seniors enrolled in IB Anthropology received the opportunity to meet the Amish, a culture which department has taught since the first semester. On Wed. 23, Anthropologist teachers Zurawski and Miller and other teachers chaperoned over 50 students on the first department trip to Lancaster, PA to personally meet the Amish. Students attending had to wake up bright and early to make the charter bus at 6am. The 2-3 hour drive was accompanied by the film, Frozen, and snacks the chaperons provided. By 9am, they met our “English” tour guide and was shown around a duplicate model of an Amish home. They later travel through the community as we saw the Amish farming, in school, or just straddling by in their horse and buggy.
“It was really nice to go see the Amish because we’ve learned about them for so long so it was nice to meet them first hand,” junior Hiwot Dagnachew said.
The group then stopped at an Amish farm and store where they met the horses and bought homemade goods before leaving our tour guide. The final hours of the trip were spent at a center in the community called Kitchen Kettle where we ate and relaxed. On a good note, Annandale finally left Lancaster and arrived home around 6pm.
“I’m hoappy I was able to make my own opinion on the Amish by personally see them. It was a great way to learn more about the people and gain another view,” junior Daniet Girmay said.
