Students participate in annual science fair
The annual science fair was held this afternoon in the cafeteria after school.
Students of all science backgrounds and classes, from Physics to Geosystems participated in the competition and presented to judges who were science teachers and people from the local community with an interest in science.
With the science fair, students are able to take on what they are interested in relating to anything, like art, but relate it to science and learn about different settings in-depth, on their own time.
Sophomore Rebecca Soulen completed a project on the effect of the weight of an object in the number of paper clips attracted.
“I like the opportunity to be able to do a hands on project,” said Soulen. Students are able to learn a lot from each other and are exposed to different things in nature or the real world.
Junior Hawa Ehsan, who completed a project measuring the height of an object and its effect on the radius of the sand, finds good aspects to the fair.
“You can see how people challenge each other and have a competitive but good spirit,” said Ehsan.
But students also found science fair to have negatives. “Science fair can be really time-consuming,” said Soulen.
As the assignment is given to the students to start preparation in the month of December, and follows a major guideline for assessment, students also have trouble managing time.
“It puts a lot of pressure on you to get the [project] done,” said senior Joel Flores.
Those who present their projects effectively to the judges and demonstrate a higher understanding of their topics in their particular category move on to districts and are given an award at the end of the science fair.
