Cheer places 5th at regionals
The varsity cheer team came in 5th place in the district finals October 23rd. They managed to score a total of 178 points against the highest scorer, South County, with 264 points, and the lowest, T.C. Williams, who had 177 points. The turnout was not what they hoped for, but they did however have an incredible season according to head coach Cragin Winkler.
“They’ve done and extremely good job this year,” Winkler said. “From the beginning we started working harder on stunts and improving our tumbling. The team has pushed themselves to break boundaries that no team at Annandale has achieved.”
Despite the district rankings, the team’s accomplishments are not defined by this one competition. They came in 5th and 4th place in the semi-final rounds, beating out T.C. Williams, Woodson, and West Potomac.
“I think we’ve been very productive this year,” junior Briana Carcano said. “We really proved ourselves to everyone.”
They hope to qualify for regional competition next year, but they are losing one, large advantage.
Their seniors this year have been a huge part in improving their overall team ability, so the outcome for the 2014-2015 season is unknown. However, they hope to bounce back from this setback and achieve their goal of going to regionals.
“Hopefully, we’re more focused in upcoming practices,” Carcano said. “We need to stop goofing off and focus on our goals.”
The ever ambitious team will begin chasing their spot in regionals in August of next year.
“We need to work on green days that are near the end of the school year, “ Winkler said. “and build off of this year’s accomplishments. I couldn’t be more proud of them, they’ve accomplished things here that no one else has at Annandale.”
