Four members of the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) attended the Virginia state conference at the Reston Town Center from April 12 to 14, with all AHS students placing in their respective events.
“We practiced for months leading up to the conference. The students put a lot of work into their projects and would present to each other to get better,” business teacher Helen Silberminz said.
Awards were as follows:
– Sophomore Ky Nguyen earned second place for her electronic career portfolio
– Senior Maleeha Farukh and junior Diva Chowdhary won third for their business presentation
– Senior Clare Lazar won fifth for her computer presentation. Lazar also won the ‘Who’s Who In FBLA’ Award
“I was really happy about my finish,” Lazar said. “Prior knowledge from my information systems class helped me place so well.”
Nguyen qualified to compete at the National Leadership Conference in Anaheim, CA on June 27-30. There has only been one other student in AHS history to achieve such a feat.
“This is my first year on FBLA and I was very surprised to do so well. Anaheim will serve as another opportunity to test myself,” Nguyen said.
Since the NLC is such a big event, Silberminz wishes she could take all four girls to California instead of just one. However, because this is only the second time a student has qualified, the club was not monetarily ready. Fundraisers are being planned but none have officially been set up.
