Paintings by the diverse student body of AHS would cover its naked walls. Students would walk into a painting in every hallway and anyone would be able to participate in its creation. This is what it would be like–if the rumored “mural project” were to be approved.
The mural would start in the history hallway near stairway one as a painting of a forest.
Meredith Stevens, the Photography, Art, and Ceramics teacher is one of the biggest supporters of the project. She preferred not to say whether the “ongoing mural” idea will be approved or not.
“There was one [mural] project that we were thinking about trying to do here, but circumstances have changed,” Stevens said. Reasons for this were not disclosed.
Murals used to cover the walls of AHS before it was renovated. Now, it is covered in white paint and the only colors involved in decoration are red, gray, and black.
“[Before renovation], the bathrooms were painted, there were all sorts of things,” Stevens said.
Katherine Gould, the Psychology teacher, is also another supporter of the project. She thinks it would benefit the students positively.
“It is the ultimate way to celebrate our students’ talents as artists by letting their expressions of beauty surround us,” Gould said. “Surrounding yourself with beauty is good for your soul.”
Gould’s students seemed to like the idea when told about a possible mural covering the school.
“I think [murals] give the school a more lively look,” senior Michael Bolton said.
Stevens also thinks a mural would catch the attention of students.
“It just makes it more welcoming place–It improves your mood when you walk down the hall and you see color rather than blank, white walls,” she said. “It’s something that really does make the school a brighter place.”
AHS’ numerous clubs would all be able to participate in the painting of the mural; in fact, anyone who just wanted to help could pitch in.
“Art students would obviously take the lead, but anybody in the school that has a love of art and who wants to help could help in some way,” Stevens said.
