While many students celebrated their snow days, happy to get three days off, others worried about the effect “Winter Break Part II” would have on their grades. Many students were counting on these last days of the second quarter to turn in assignments, retake tests or quizzes and bring up their semester grades.
Now, students have a chance to do so, as Principal John Ponton announced on Jan. 27 that second quarter grades would not be due until 3 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 3. This means that students will have the opportunity to turn in late work and make up grades on both Feb. 2 and Feb. 3. However, Feb. 2 will not be a collaboration day, as was originally planned.
“I’m happy that I can bring up my grades and that I can enjoy my snow days without being stressed,” senior Ian Griffin said.
Many seniors are grateful for these extra days, as mid-year reports, which include their semester grades, will soon be sent out to the colleges to which they applied.
“Now I have a chance to turn in some late work and hopefully bring up my chemistry grade,” senior Jessie Diroll said. “So my transcript can hopefully look better.”
Some, however, were content to let the quarter end on Jan. 28, as was originally planned.
“If the quarter had ended as it was supposed to, I would feel more secure about my grades because I know everything that has gone into them,” sophomore Jenny Jessen said. “Also, I wouldn’t have to worry about teachers trying to cram two days of work into one day of the quarter.”
Some seniors have another reason to celebrate. IB Diploma Candidates’ Extended Essays were supposed to be turned in on Jan. 28, but due to the snow, will now be due on Feb. 2.
“I’m so happy that the deadline was extended,” Diroll said. “I still have a lot of work to do.”
