Metal Working? Key production? The name “Key Club” might lead someone to believe that there is a club at AHS about keys. However, Key Club is actually a service organization at AHS that provides students with numerous opportunities for community service hours. The club meets once a month and today was their second meeting. On the other hand, it was actually the first for many students.
“I missed the first meeting because of a conflict with the National Honor Society meeting,” said sophomore Madeline de Mello.
This was the case for many of the hundred club members. The Key Club is one of the largest and most popular clubs at AHS, as evidenced by the outpouring of kids into Clausen Hall at 2:15 p.m.
Lillian Singer, the president of Key Club, started off the meeting with the Key Club national pledge. She then dove into an overview of the events happening in October. Later she identifies three big events; the Fall Parade, the Fall Festival and “Trick-or-Treating For UNICEF.” The Fall Parade and Fall Festival are on the same day, but involve different contributions and jobs. The festival is where members set up booths and games for kids. The members took a vote and they collectively decided not to participate in the homecoming parade in order to participate in the Fall Parade. The actual parade is a county wide one which Key Club helps set up for, participates in and makes a banner. The “Trick-or-Treating For UNICEF” involves members getting donations for UNICEF, an organization that helps children around the world. Singer then went on to announce the Key Club member of the month, sophomore Harris Fitzgerel, in addition to congratulating senior Jenna Troung for creating the Key Club website.
She then let the masses loose to go to the respective tables to sign up for different events. In addition to running the meeting, Singer also “delegates work to other officers and makes sure everyone knows the events happening every month”.
Key Club will also do some things differently this year as opposed to years past. They are going to have multiple committees, including a website committee, a membership committee and a fundraising committee.
After 10 or 15 minutes, sophomore Noah Fitzgerel, the treasurer, came up to the podium and announced those who were randomly chosen to partake in the shelter event on Nov. 6. The sound of disappointed sighs were more prominent than the exclamations of joy.
Key Club is a great way to meet people with the same interest in community service as you. It allows people to get involved in their community and help others that are less fortunate. if anyone is interested in joining Key Club they can talk to Ms Adair in the history hallway.
