Syria Issues Continue to Escalate
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Secretary of State John Kerry, along with United Nations envoy Lakhdar Brahimi have been in talks in Geneva, Switzerland to discuss a peaceful solution for recent events in Syria. The country of Syria, located underneath Turkey and next to Iraq, has been the talk of the world ever since the outbreak of the Syrian Civil War. Tensions have escalated even further since the chemical weapons attack on rebels located in Damascus, Syria’s capital city. Recently President Barack Obama has advocated for missile strikes in response to chemical weapons use, but they have been postponed until more things begin to develop.
Russia has proposed that Syria hand over its chemical arsenal into international control in order to prevent further bloodshed. Talks have almost concluded between the US, Russia, the UN envoys, and both sides of Syria’s civil war. President Obama has changed his stance and he is looking for a peaceful solution. “President Obama is deeply committed to a negotiated solution with respect to Syria.” Secretary of State John Kerry said.
Talks will be continued in New York later in the month. The speed of peace negotiations will be determined by how quickly Syria will hand over its chemical arsenal to international powers. This is an issue that will take a while to fully resolve, but progress is being made through negotiations between all parties.
