In a country where people cannot walk the streets in fear of their lives, a victory has been won in the movement towards peace. According to the Washington Post, Elizondo Ramirez, the leader of the extremely violent drug cartel group, the Zetas, was arrested Friday after attempting to escape arrest by throwing a hand grenade towards the police.
“I think that this is good for the country because it will reduce the fighting, as well as drug dealing,” said freshman Hernan Calderon, who has family in Mexico.
Ramirez is being convicted of ordering the death of 49 people on the behalf of the Zeta group and leaving their decapitated bodies on the highway as a clear threat to other drug cartels. The Zeta group is currently fighting a turf war with the Gulf and Sinaloa groups for lucrative areas in Mexico. The Zetas have since expanded past Mexico and into Guatemala.
Since his arrest, Ramirez has allegedly confessed to the murder of members of the Gulf cartel, burning and burying their bodies in the Nuevo Leon state. Many Mexican-American students have felt relief from the news, expressing the hope that has come along with these recent events.
“There will be more freedom for the people because they won’t be as afraid to go outside anymore. I think the government should strengthen their drug policy and crack down on border patrol,” said Calderon.
