Club spotlight: Green Atoms

Green atoms is Annadale environmental club that has been around for multiple years helping advance the sustainability of the community. Their great efforts and dedication lead the way in promoting recycling. Their efforts and their impact on our school’s sustainability, and the steps they are taking to create a more environmentally conscious high school.

The club is sponsored by our Biology teachers, Riley Holt and Esther Kim. Meetings are held on Wednesday to talk about upcoming volunteer plans. “We also do recycling on Monday and Thursday after school too. Students  have the opportunity to sign up for recycling on an excel spreadsheet, students then gain volunteer hours for helping the school recycle and getting everything from the teachers room down to the recycling bin,” Holt said.

Multiple students join Green atoms to be involved in their community creating a lasting impact for our environment. “A lot of the incentive of being in Green Atoms has to do with its recycling program being an easy way to gain service hours, but I’m also a part of the club because I’m concerned for Earth’s future,” senior Allan Huynl said. “We only have one planet to call home, and it’s our duty to preserve it any way we can, no matter how small the job may be.”

The garden has been giving organic fruits and vegetables for students to be able to take home, which could inspire their families to get involved as well. “We also do community outreach to different elementary schools. There are opportunities for students to help set up gardens. We do a lot of agriculture and teaching everyone sustainable gardening practices, setting that up in the courtyard,” said Holt. This creates new initiatives to help the environment in a fun and interactive way. “And the food that we grow in the courtyard, students take some home and then the leftovers end up going to the Annandale High School pantry.”

Highlighting the club’s commitment to recycling, and underscores the importance of maintaining a clean and safe community environment. Regrettably, not enough individuals recognize the pressing need for greater environmental awareness.  “I wanted to do Green Atoms cause I think that the sustainability aspect is very important, we’re living in a crazy drastically changing world all the time and every day more things are happening and it is important for people to learn to be sustainable and be a part of the betterment of the environment,” said Holt. “I think it’s also important student get opportunities to learn in how to grow their own food and produce cause price of groceries are getting more and more expensive with these changing climates, You get the opportunity to learn about how we can support our local ecosystem, support environmental justice you also learn sustainable farming practices for later on in life”

Green atoms has had many positive impacts, it’s important to continue to support and be inspired by their efforts to create a greener and more sustainable future for all. If you’re passionate about making a difference for our environment, why not become part of the Green Atoms Club? Join and take action and create a greener world for everyone. Together, we can make a real impact!
