This year’s presidential race hits close to home for most Americans. Gay marriage, abortion, health care and the economy are some of the major topics being argued. We hear about it and see it everywhere. Campaign ads and the opinions of people are being thrown at us left and right.
I’ve grown up in a strong Republican household. When I was younger I just went with what my parents have said about politics, until recently. Being of Hispanic descent I feel strongly about new immigration polices. President Obama has proposed The DREAM Act, a policy allowing illegal immigrants the opportunity to obtain a green card if they meet certain qualifications on a case to case basis. I have relatives and close family friends that have applied for a version of the DREAM Act. If Obama is to be reelected, he would continue to try and get the act passed. Meanwhile, opponent Mitt Romney is not in favor of The DREAM Act.
The economy has also played a large role in my opinion. With the recent lay-off of my father we have had to deal with living without health insurance and no college fund for my sisters and me. Romney earlier in his campaign said, “Borrow money from your parents if you have to” when he spoke at a college in Ohio. In my case and many other kids cases, it is just not possible. Obama understands what it’s like to grow up with financial struggle, while Romney cannot relate. Romney has grown up with all the money he needs. Obama wants to make health insurance obtainable for low income families.
I often hear that people tend to be more conservative due to their religious beliefs. In church I was taught that abortion and gay marriage are wrong. Who are we to decide what is wrong for other people? I disagree with people that pick a candidate solely on those two issues. There are more important topics to be considered when choosing the candidate you want to vote for.
Voters have to consider other people and their financial status, as well as our children and their futures. We want them to be able to have a stable job and economy.
In the past four years, Obama has created jobs, continued to try and improve our nations economy, and has made health care plans viable. I believe he is the right choice for this election, with four more years he will put our country back on track. I do not consider myself a Democrat or a Republican, but this election I’m supporting our President Barack Obama.
