Pro/Con: Plastic surgery

Pro:

There’s a long-standing stigma surrounding plastic surgery, but what’s not often considered by its opposers is the slew of beneficial reasons to take a trip to a surgeon’s office. It’s easy to pick a physical attribute about yourself that you’d like to change, for some people, those desired changes could have an extraordinarily positive impact on mental health, quality of life, and confidence.

It may seem shallow to some, but getting that nose job or a little bit of lip filler can drastically improve a person’s confidence and alleviate negative feelings about their appearance. It’s important to feel good about yourself, that includes the way you look.

Suffering from constant ridicule over your looks and feeling insecure all the time with no way to hide it is a nightmare, so if plastic surgery is your only option, you should be able to decide to change whatever you want if you have the option.

There are two sides to plastic surgery. Aesthetic procedures like rhinoplasty, face lifts, and fillers are just the tip of the plastic surgery iceberg. Moreover, procedures like gender affirmation surgeries, birth-defect repairs, or burn grafting are all considered cosmetic procedures that can change a person’s life.

Certain cosmetic surgeries can also treat medical conditions and relieve pain. For example, patients suffering from neuropathy can be treated using nerve grafts or transfers performed by a plastic surgeon.

The anxiety and depression that plague someone who dislikes something about their appearance can negatively affect their quality of life to the point where it becomes unbearable. Whether you suffer from low self-esteem, chronic pain, or with your identity, cosmetic surgery could be the solution.

Con:

As plastic surgery becomes more common, affordable, and accepted in society, the culture of conforming to unattainable beauty standards set by the media and society gets out of hand.

Changing something small about your appearance that you think about all the time is one thing, but getting trapped in the neverending botox loop and losing sight of your natural features is another.

Botched surgeries are nearly impossible to come back from, but there’s such a thing as a long-term-botch. Currently, there’s a rampant issue with Botox and fillers; young people can’t get enough. The more they alter their looks, the farther they get from how they originally looked, which unintentionally makes them forget their original objective. This is what creates that long-term-botched look.

Not only does this start to look a little scary, but it can get dangerous. People abuse these resources and eventually face the consequences. Who wants to lose muscle function, mobility, and start to look almost frozen?

More extreme procedures can have more extreme repercussions. Complications in surgery can cause nerve damage, blood clots, infection, and scarring.

The recovery process for cosmetic surgery procedures can be grueling and require a lot of maintenance. People put their whole life on hold to survive the recovery process.
