Weyes Blood and the spiritual journey to being a poetic and magical artist. Natalie Laura Mering, born in Santa Monica, CA and primarily raised in Doylestown, PA, embarked on a profound spiritual journey towards becoming an esteemed poetic and musical artist. Since 2003, Natalie has consistently showcased her musical talents, initially alongside the band Jackie-O’Mother——. Her early albums and EPs, such as “Strange Chalices of Seeing,” “The Outside Room,” and “The Innocents,” demonstrated her enchanting musical powers. However, it was not until the release of “Front Row Seat to Earth” that Natalie began to gain widespread recognition. Three years later, she ascended to stardom with her acclaimed album “Titanic Rising,” featuring the hit single “Andromeda.”In a 2022 interview with The Guardian, Natalie reflected, “This music is so ominous, that I ended up making beautiful, feminine music is a surprise.” What distinguishes Weyes Blood is her evocative voice, which transports listeners to otherworldly realms, reminiscent of a place like Andromeda. Natalie has often conveyed her spiritual connection through her songwriting and performances, a sentiment evident in her fifth studio album where she articulates the idea of our hearts aglow. Raised in a deeply religious Pentecostal family, Natalie sang in gospel choirs growing up . However, she distanced herself from Christianity at the age of 14. Natalie has expressed that music became the medium through which she filled a significant void created by her upbringing and religious values. She states, “Growing up with a certain mentality and religious values like Christianity leaves a considerable void.” Natalie’s fascination with human history deeply enriches her musical compositions. For instance, “Titanic Rising” is not merely noteworthy for its blend of orchestral elements with modern synthesizers and slide guitars. Natalie’s insightful social commentary resonates profoundly. She remarks, “The Titanic symbolizes mankind’s ultimate arrogance. We believed we had conquered nature with our ‘unsinkable’ ship, yet it sank, with the third-class passengers bearing the brunt. This parallels our current predicament with climate change.” The spiritual essence of Natalie’s artistry is akin to a transformative religious experience. Attending her performances evokes feelings similar to a deeply moving religious mass, where the power of hymns draws attendees closer to a higher calling. While her strict Pentecostal upbringing influences her gospel-inspired lyrics and music, as evident in songs like “God Turn Me into a Flower ” and “Everyday,” there is a multifaceted depth to her artistry. Natalie’s captivating voice, combined with indie dream-pop production, creates a sense of transcendence, making audiences feel as though they are collectively rising above the ordinary. Natalie Laura Mering WEYES BLOOD is just not another indie artist she has worked and paved the way for herself through religious trauma to transcend into a beautiful human with a beautiful voice.
